As your day gets hectic, it can turn into a busy week, month, or even year. With our busy work and personal schedules, it’s easy to get behind in our ever changing field if you don’t make an effort to stay up to date. It’s no secret that you want to stay on top of what is happening in your career, but some people still don’t understand exactly why.
Staying relevant in your career is the best way to help job security. If you let yourself fall behind because you aren’t learning about growing trends, you are allowing yourself to become outdated and replaceable. Don’t let a new employee come in and surpass you. Instead, stay up to date in your field and be a resource for new employees to utilize during their transition into the company and possibly the field itself.
If you want to move up in your company you need to be able to demonstrate your knowledge and competency within your field. Demonstrate how you stay current by bringing your knowledge to the table. If you are wanting to grown within the company but you must apply in order to move up into that next position, bringing this knowledge will put you ahead of the other candidates applying for that same position. Show them that you care about the changes within your field and that you are actively aware them.
Furthermore, if you want to change companies but stay within the same field, staying current will again, help set you apart from other candidates. Once you land the job, (because you are the most qualified of course) knowing what is changing and going on in your field will help you transition into your new role easier and will help you become an immediate asset to your new employer.
Lastly, and personally I think this is the most important reason to stay current in your field, is staying motivated. It is easy to lose motivation when you feel left behind and find yourself grasping the ledge trying to catch up. Stay up on the changes in your field, what is trending, what is working, what isn’t working, in what direction the field is moving, do this solely for you, your own success and your own sanity. No one can take your knowledge away from you, so continue to learn, stay current, and thrive in your career.
Sometimes it may seem like a nuisance to constantly try to stay current on everything that changes. But making that solid effort will put you apart from others in the best way possible.
Be sure to check back in a couple of weeks where I will cover how you can stay current in your field and offer resources for you to be successful in your professional development endeavors!
